Simple valve cuts pollution
MOTORING:
Engineers from Warren Spring, the environment technology agency of the Department of Trade and Industry, have found benefits in a new application of an old idea so striking that some experts believe it could replace catalytic converters, writes Neville Hodgkinson.
The device is a spring-loaded valve, fitted in minutes, that improves the air-fuel ratio in petrol engines. A recent trial with two 1988 registered cars showed an impressive 22% reduction in fuel consumption and a comparable fall in most measured pollutants.
Dr. Neal Ward, environmental expert at Surrey University's department of chemistry, says "It is more effective at reducing some of the pollutants, it does not have to heat up as the converters do, and it decreases fuel consumption into the bargain.
