"Taking care of your PROSTATE is taking care of your manhood", so says Dr. James Balch, Urologist.
Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH) refers to the enlargement of the
prostate gland. This condition is now reaching almost epidemic proportions in the Western
world and affects a man's ability to urinate and often gives rise to other problems of a
sexual nature.
Unfortunately these more personal problems are often initially not noticed because they
generally occur over a gradual period of time. One of the first symptoms is quite simply
having to get up frequently during the night to urinate and nearly 90% of all prostate
cancer goes undetected until it has passed the easily treated stage. Embarrassment is
often a major factor in the decision to disregard the symptoms.
Prostatic Enlargement occurs in 96% of men aged 45+, and although in
itself it is not a dangerous condition, it can however lead to other potentially very
serious conditions. One lesser example is of bladder infections as a result of the bladder
not emptying completely, which can then progress further to infections of both the urethra
and the kidneys. If left completely untreated this can lead to prostate cancer - which is
the No.3 killer of men in the UK.
It may be that your diet is also playing a leading role in the development of BPH
as some of the by-products of cholesterol metabolism (free radicals) have been shown to
damage human cells and are indeed carcinogenic in nature. These tend to accumulate in the
human prostate gland and have been shown to initiate the degeneration of prostatic
cells. It is wise to suggest that prevention should start well before the symptoms appear,
and as a consequence diets of red meat and concentrated protein, which appear to be
primary sources should be restricted at the least, if not avoided.
The only medically-approved treatments are prescription drugs and/or invasive surgery and
every year there are almost 10,000 deaths in the UK alone from prostate cancer. Prostate
surgery has become the second most common surgery in men and it carries with it an up to
50% risk of impotence.
